That photo you’re about to post looks like just a picture. Embedded inside the file, invisible until someone goes looking, is a block of data called EXIF metadata — and it can include the exact GPS coordinates where the photo was taken, the date and time down to the second, the make and model of your camera or phone, and sometimes even a serial number. Post enough geotagged photos and a stranger can map your home, your workplace, your gym, and your routine. This has been used to locate people who very much did not want to be found.
The fix is quick and painless once you know where to look.
What’s actually hidden in a photo
When your camera or phone saves an image, it tucks technical details into the file alongside the pixels. The privacy-relevant ones:
- GPS coordinates — a precise latitude/longitude of where the shot was taken. This is the big one.
- Timestamp — exact date and time, which combined with location reveals patterns.
- Device info — camera/phone make, model, and sometimes a unique identifier that links photos to the same device.
- Software and settings — editing apps used, orientation, and other technical fields.
Some of this is harmless. The GPS coordinates and the “all these photos came from the same device” linkage are the parts worth caring about.
Does the platform strip it for me?
Sometimes — but don’t count on it. Most large social networks (Instagram, Facebook, X) strip EXIF on upload for public posts, mostly to save space and to keep the data for themselves rather than for your protection. But there are big gaps:
- Photos you send over email, chat apps, or send as file attachments usually keep full metadata.
- Files uploaded to cloud storage, forums, marketplaces, dating profiles, and many smaller sites often keep it.
- Photos you share as a file (e.g. “here’s the original”) rather than through the platform’s compression keep everything.
- Selling something online? Marketplace listing photos are a classic way to accidentally broadcast your home address.
The safe assumption: metadata travels with the file unless you removed it. Strip it yourself and you don’t have to guess what each platform does.
The best fix: stop geotagging in the first place
If your photos never record location, there’s nothing to strip. Turn off camera location access:
- iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera → set to Never. (You can leave it on and strip later if you like geotags for your own organizing — but Never is the simplest privacy default.)
- Android: open the Camera app → Settings → turn off Location tags / Save location. Also confirm the Camera app’s location permission under Settings → Location.
This is the set-and-forget option. Your photos still work perfectly; they just no longer carry coordinates.
Stripping metadata before you share
For photos that already have metadata, or when you want to keep your originals geotagged but share clean copies:
On iPhone
The Photos app has it built in. Select a photo, tap Share, tap Options at the top, and turn off Location (and choose to send as a smaller size if you like). The shared copy goes out without GPS. To permanently remove location from the stored photo: open it, tap the info (ⓘ) button, and choose Adjust / Remove Location.
On Android
Open the photo in Google Photos (or your gallery), tap the info button to see the map/location, and use the menu to remove location. Some Android galleries and manufacturer apps also offer “remove location data” on share. If yours doesn’t, use an app made for it (search for a reputable open-source “EXIF eraser”).
On a computer
- Windows: right-click the file → Properties → Details → Remove Properties and Personal Information → “Create a copy with all possible properties removed.” Built in, no software needed.
- macOS: Preview and Photos can strip location on export; the ⌘I inspector shows what’s there.
- Any platform, power users: the command-line tool ExifTool removes everything with
exiftool -all= photo.jpg. It’s the gold standard for batch-cleaning folders of images.
A quick verify
Want to confirm it worked? Check the file’s properties/details (Windows Properties, macOS ⌘I, or an EXIF viewer). If the GPS fields are empty, you’re clean.
A few real-world habits
- Screenshots are safe(r). A screenshot of a photo doesn’t carry the original’s GPS data — handy when you want to share something without its metadata.
- Watch the background, not just the metadata. Stripping EXIF doesn’t help if the photo itself shows your house number, a school logo, or a reflection with identifying detail. Privacy is the whole frame, not just the file.
- Selling online? Take listing photos with location off, or strip them. Buyers don’t need your coordinates.
