About

Privacy advice that practices what it preaches.

Preserving Privacy exists because most privacy advice is either fear-mongering, out of date, or quietly trying to sell you something. The goal here is narrow and honest: give ordinary people clear, practical steps to reduce how much of their life is tracked, sold, and surveilled — and explain the laws and news that shape all of it in plain English.

The promise

A privacy site has no business spying on its readers, so this one doesn't. Concretely, that means:

  • No third-party trackers. No Google Analytics, no ad pixels, no fingerprinting scripts. The site is static and self-hosted.
  • No ads that spy. No ad network, no behavioral targeting, no sponsored content dressed up as advice.
  • No cookie banner — because there are no tracking cookies to consent to.

You don't have to trust that claim. Open the What You Leak tool, load any page with your browser's network panel open, and check for yourself. Verifiability is the whole point.

How it's funded

Running a site costs a little money and a lot of time. Rather than sell your attention or data, this one is supported in ways that don't cost you your privacy:

  • Reader donations. If a guide here saved you time or grief, you can chip in. That's the main way the site keeps going.
  • Honest gear recommendations. The gear page links to privacy hardware worth buying. Some links are affiliate links, clearly disclosed, and the recommendations are the same whether or not they pay.

What you'll never find: display ads, "we value your privacy" pop-ups that mean the opposite, newsletter spam, or a recommendation we don't believe in because someone paid for it.

How the advice is made

Guides are written to be practical and honest about trade-offs — including telling you when a popular "privacy tip" is placebo that isn't worth your time. News and tracker entries cite primary sources, and the law & news tracker is updated as bills move. This is a solo project with AI assistance for research and drafting; facts on legislation are checked against primary sources at the time of writing.

Follow along, privately

The way to follow the site is RSS — no email, no tracking, and we never even know you're subscribed. There's deliberately no newsletter right now: we aren't collecting email addresses at all, so there's no list to leak or sell. And the whole point of this project aligns with the work of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which is worth supporting directly.

Corrections & contact

Found an error, an out-of-date step, or a broken link? Corrections are welcome and taken seriously — accuracy is the currency of a site like this. Email info@preservingprivacy.com and it goes straight to a person.

What we do — and mostly don't do — with anything you send is spelled out in the privacy policy.
